Nitrates in tap water: risks and solutions
Nitrates are nitrogen compounds naturally present in the environment, and their concentration in water intended for human consumption is regulated at European and French level.
The regulatory limit for drinking water is 50 mg/L. Below that value, the water supplied is considered compliant for the general population.
For infants and pregnant women, health authorities frequently recommend a lower precautionary value. For any individual situation, the reference remains your regional health agency, the Ministry of Health or Anses.

Where do nitrates in water come from?
Nitrates found in water mainly come from agricultural nitrogen inputs (fertilisers, livestock effluents) carried by run-off and infiltration into groundwater and rivers.
That is why values vary widely between areas: they depend on the abstracted resource and on land use around the abstraction point, not on your home.
Am I concerned?
The only way to know is to look at the value actually measured on your network and published in the official analyses.

- If an exceedance is reported, follow the instructions of your regional health agency and water utility, which take precedence over any general information.
What works, and what does not
Nitrates are dissolved ions: most household devices sold to improve taste have no significant effect on them. This is the most widely misunderstood point.
1.A standard filter pitcher does not effectively remove nitrates
An activated carbon pitcher mainly acts on taste (chlorine, some organic compounds). It should not be bought with the aim of reducing nitrates.
2.Boiling does not reduce nitrates
Boiling water does not remove nitrates: as part of the water evaporates, the remaining ions can even become slightly more concentrated.
3.Reverse osmosis
Reverse osmosis is one of the few household technologies genuinely effective on nitrates. It requires an under-sink installation, regular maintenance, and also removes useful minerals.
4.Specific ion-exchange resins
Some resins are designed specifically to capture nitrates. Check that the device explicitly mentions nitrates: an anti-scale resin does not treat them.
Limits and when to act
If the value measured on your network is clearly below the regulatory limit, installing nitrate-specific equipment has no demonstrated benefit.
In case of an exceedance, the utility and the health authority manage corrective measures and inform users, including any recommendations concerning infants.
For an individual situation (pregnancy, infant feeding, medical condition), speak to a health professional or the health authorities rather than an equipment seller.
