Water too hard: what can you do?
Water hardness is measured in French degrees (°f) and reflects its calcium and magnesium content. Water is considered soft below 15 °f and hard above 30 °f. In France hardness varies widely with geology: very high on the limestone soils of the Paris Basin, low in granitic areas such as Brittany or the Massif Central.
Contrary to a widespread belief, hard water poses no health risk. Anses even stresses that calcium and magnesium in water contribute to recommended daily intake. There is in fact no regulatory hardness limit for drinking water, only a quality reference.
Limescale is therefore mainly a domestic issue: scaled heating elements, reduced water-heater efficiency, marks on taps, tight-feeling skin. Responses range from regular descaling to installing a softener, which only makes sense above around 30 °f and implies keeping one unsoftened tap for drinking.
Key point: limescale is calcium and magnesium. It is a comfort issue (taste, scaled appliances), not a health issue.
Am I concerned?
Hardness depends on the geology your water travels through, so it varies from one commune to the next, sometimes from one neighbourhood to another. The clearest signs at home are white deposits in the kettle, marks on glassware and taps, and soap that lathers poorly.
To move from impression to fact, look up the value published for your commune and, if you are wondering about your drinking water in general, run the diagnostic.
What can actually be done
Solutions are ranked here by usefulness. The first one is deliberately to do nothing, because for health there is nothing to correct.
1.Do nothing, for health
Hard water is drinkable and its calcium and magnesium contribute to daily mineral intake. No treatment is required for health reasons; the only reasons to act are comfort and equipment.
2.Descale appliances regularly
The kettle, coffee machine, iron and shower head are the parts that suffer. Regular descaling with a food-grade acid, following the manufacturer instructions, is the cheapest and most effective answer to the real problem.
3.A filter jug, for taste only
Activated-carbon and ion-exchange cartridges reduce part of the hardness in the jug and change the mouthfeel. They treat your drinking glass, never the plumbing or the water heater.
4.A water softener, with reservations
A softener protects the whole system, but softened water is richer in sodium and is not advised as drinking water for low-salt diets. If one is installed, keep an unsoftened tap for drinking and cooking, and maintain the unit properly.
Limits and when to act
No solution turns hard water into a health improvement, because there is no health problem to fix. Treatments only address comfort and the durability of your appliances.
Acting makes sense when scaling is visible and recurring, when the water heater loses efficiency, or when the taste bothers you enough to stop you drinking tap water. Below that, descaling is enough.
Beware of devices sold as magnetic or catalytic anti-limescale: their effectiveness is disputed and not established by independent evaluation. Treat any promise of a miracle result with caution.
